Candles are very significant to the whole humanity. There are a lot of benefits that we can get from candles. This has been a common practice way back from the early times up to the present. However, it is also essential for us to look back how candles came to be.

Little knowledge is available when it comes to the history of candle making. It is written that diverse cultures developed their own way of candle making during the course of history. It is believed that as early as 3000 B.C., the Egyptians were the first to create a candle without a wick that was made of beeswax. During the Qin Dynasty (221–206 B.C.), the Chinese made candles from whale fat. However, it was believed that the Han Dynasty (202 B.C. – 220 A.D.) and the Jin Dynasty (265–420) used beeswax. The Indians, on the other hand, used temple candles made of wax from boiling cinnamon. The natives of the Northwest Pacific region during the first century A.D. used oil from eulachon or “candlefish.” It was the Romans who developed candles made from tallow with a wick made from pith of rushes.

As centuries go by, candles have changed in appearance and the influence of their importance has greatly increased. Nevertheless, their ancient significance can never be forgotten. They are widely used in religious activities back then and even today. Based from the Bible, it is believed that as early as 10th century B.C., people were already using candles. It was during the medieval era that they even increased in popularity and were extensively used in churches, monasteries, commercial and public places.

Today candles have a wide variety of uses. Some people use them as ornaments to beautify their surroundings. They also create an atmosphere of elegance and romance. That is the reason why handmade candles are well-known in the industry today because candle lovers can now choose their own style according to the appearance that they want. Aside from this, they also stimulate the creative mind of writers. Many poets make candles as their inspiration for writing poems as the effect of their enchanting and mysterious flickering light. Candles also suggest a feeling of tranquility and serenity. They are even used in aromatherapy because some candles are specially scented to give off delightful aroma. This will also help eliminate unpleasant odors. Some candles have insect repellent properties. Today, candles can also be used to remove earwax. Ear candles are specifically designed to warm up and loosen the cerumen inside the ear. Moreover, special occasions are really made special by candles. Birthday cakes are not complete without magic candles that keep on burning no matter how many times you blow it. In weddings, a candle symbolizes unity. There are still a great deal of occasions being graced by candles like Christmas, christening, anniversaries, communion, father’s day, mother’s day, and a lot more. They can even be a nice gift to the ones you love.

There are still good deals of importance of candles that we can think off. For this generation and the next to come, candles will always be a part of our existence. Despite the advancement in technology, still we cannot deny the fact that we need to go back to the basics.
