ear candle

Can ear candles really extract wax from your ears?

Well do they work? Or is it all a myth? Well whilst I do use them and find them most beneficial, particularly in keeping my sinuses clear. Just think of the force that would be required to vacuum out the ear wax, even if it was softened up first with ear drops it would still be very thick.

Have you not all heard of people who have had wax problems syringed out, and just how painful they tell you the process is?

Even in a very, very soft state, the suction that would be needed to extract it would be very great. So it is highly unlikely that the chimney effect caused by the flame at the end of the cone will generate enough suction to remove anything never mind was, it would be unlikely to have enough suction to extract a liquid.

When you have used an ear candle if you break it open you will find what many of the alternative medicine providers who use them claim to be the ear wax residue, clearly this is likely to be untrue and more likely to be wax residue from the cone itself.

Indeed if you do believe they suck out the wax, then try this. Simply fill up your sink with water, light an ear candle and place the narrow end that would go in you ear in the water and see how much water it sucks up. It will be nothing.

However I do believe that using ear candles helps to loosen hardened wax, allowing it to naturally find its way out of the ear.
